Massage first then statistics.

I have known Karmelle Chaise since 2002 (mainly via email). I am so please for her that this got off the ground.

Five years ago on a humanitarian mission to Ukraine, Karmelle Chaise saw something she still can't get out of her aid worker's mind or her mother's heart: a lone child in a squalid orphanage silently rocking back and forth like a metronome.

.............

Several weeks later, Chaise returned to the former Soviet state with her husband, Keith, and adopted her two children, 3-year-old Avonlea and 1-year-old Eden.

And now she's on a mission to help the orphans she had to leave behind.

At the invitation of two Ukrainian orphanages, she's leaving Friday to start a program to teach caregivers the importance of human touch to infants. She and other volunteers will teach the unskilled workers the science and art of how to hold, rock and even massage children.

Here are some statistics that I collected on orphanages and other social services in Ukraine. I have a bunch of numbers, so I am starting with the numbers I collected in 2006.

7 March 2006.

I counted 530 orphanages and shelters listed on the NAC's offical web site. I have heard this isn't a complete list, but it is close.

They are listed here.

Yuri Pavlenko [Youth Minister] attracted the interest of the media saying that the government was elaborating a brand new programme of protection of children-orphans and children from poor families. “Rea; statistics will be promulgated – he stated. – There are much more children-orphans and children from poor families in Ukraine than official statistics say. Real figures differ in few times. According to statistics, there are 30 thousand children-orphans. In fact there are 100-150 thousand” – the minister said.

In 2005 more than four thousand parents were deprived of parental rights, as reported Yuri Pavlenko Minister for Family and Sport during today’s press conference in Kyiv.

..................

Pavlenko noted that in accordance with President’s decree local authorities must trace and prevent cases when both parents do not have a job. Pavlenko pointed out that social service registered more than 40 thousands families of this kind all over Ukraine. “Our task is to save a child, but to save a family for him as well,” said the Minister.
