Ukrainian Politics – Lame Duck Yushchenko

I enjoy reading Nicholas’ Kiev blog. He is an American who has lived in Ukraine for 15 years now.

His blog contains gems like Ukrainians Arrested For Smuggling Pork Fat.

He also posts news stories about Ukrainian politics like Ukraine’s Premier Asks Prosecutor To Block Borys Tarasyuk As Foreign Minister.

Most of the time he is just posting news articles that he thinks are interesting.

His blog today cleared up the current political situation for me… Yushchenko is a lame duck. He is quoting from The Sidney Morning Herald

The man who led Ukraine’s orange revolution two years ago has been transformed into a lame-duck president following a humiliating parliamentary vote that in effect strips him of all powers.

The President, Viktor Yushchenko, no longer has the power to veto the choice of prime minister or foreign minister. Officials from Mr Yushchenko’s Our Ukraine party described the vote as unconstitutional.
