Cool Stuff by www fg-a com

I am continuing to list the places to find information and photos on Ukrainian specialized orphanages and internats.

(Note: I am use the “cool stuff” photo because these bloggers are doing very cool things.)

I love the Hibs football (soccer) fans. This Scottish team traveled to Dnepropetrovsk Ukraine to play a match in 2005. And their fans decided to visit and drop some donations off at an orphanage. After seeing so much need at the orphanage, they banded together and created the Dniprokids.com charity.

September 2006 the charity delivered donations to 2 Dnepro orphanages; Odinkovka and Predniprovsk. They also provided donations for a Dnepro Crisis Pregnancy Centre. The charity posted photos on their web site.

There are a couple of journals about this visit. One is from Lix. Mark posted about recent trip to see the Bairns of Dnipro. (I love Scottish accents.. the bairns :) )

Stevie posted part 1, part 2, part 3.

Next a photo visit to Volhynia.

Volhynia (Volyn’; also called Volynia) comprises the historic region in western Ukraine located between the rivers Pripyat and Western Buh — to the north of Galicia and of Podolia. The area has one of the oldest Slavic settlements in Europe. Part of historical Volhynia now forms the Volyn, Rivne, and parts of Zhitomir and Ternopil Oblast of Ukraine, as well as parts of Poland (see Chełm). Other major cities include Lutsk, Kovel, Kremenets, and Novohrad-Volynskyi.

Carolyn Drake is a photographer and currently on a Fulbright in Ukraine. Take a look at her Crimean Tartar, Specialized Orphanage and Ukrainian Singles photos. Very colorful… very alive.

Now a brief trip to Odessa Orphanage #4 with Sarah. She is sharing a letter that describes the orphanage. Look at the times mentioned. The 10-18 year old children are in bed for about 11 hours.

There are about 250 kids in state orphanage #4 in Odessa Ukraine. They are all school aged children, ages 10-18. The kids eat, sleep, study, go to school, and play everything in the orphanage.

During the school year they have school classes 6 days a week from about 8:00-2:00. They eat lunch around 2:30 and then have a few hours of free time, which is usually spent watching TV or if the weather is nice sometimes they play outside (boys like soccer a lot).

At 5:00 they do homework, 7:00 is diner and then they go to bed. During the summer all of the kids go to a “summer camp”, but it really isn’t such a great place. They get to go swimming in the Black Sea but that is about it for entertainment.

Life in the orphanage is tough, they have food and clothes and a place to sleep but no one to love them and care about them as individuals.
