Ukrainian Movies - Part 2

Part 1 is here. I found several movies (in English) that reference Ukraine. Here are a couple of other movies.

The Sum of All Fears was released in 2002. It is based on a book by Tom Clancy and stars Ben Affleck and Morgan Freeman. Here is why this mainstream movie is on my list.

About an hour into the movie, when Ryan meets Clark after he is ambushed by the two Ukrainian officers, there are a number of mistakes. For one thing, the officers are not speaking Ukrainian, but pure Russian. Secondly, Clark asks Ryan to tell them to take their shoes off - but we've already seen that Clark knows Russian, when he talked to Spassky's mother. Why doesn't he tell them himself? After that scene, he remarks to Ryan, "You know Ukrainian?"... however Ryan too, just like the "Ukrainian" officers, was speaking Russian.

It really isn't surprising the Ukrainian soldiers would speak Russian.

Taras Bulba

Taras Bulba was highly recommended to me by an Ukrainian-American friend. It was released in 1962. It stars Tony Curtis and Yul Brynner.

The Cossacks of Eastern Europe join the Poles to rid the Turks from the Steps of Europe. In return for their aid, the Poles agree to give control of the Steps to the Cossacks. After the battle, however, the Poles back out of their agreement and force the Cossacks into the hills. Taras Bulba (Yul Brynner), a Cossack Colonel, raises his son, Andrei Bulba (Tony Curtis) to learn the ways of the Poles so he can one day defeat them in battle. In his learning process, however, Andrei falls in love with the daughter of a Polish Nobleman. This twist causes Andrei Bulba to choose between the love of the Cossacks, and the love of a woman, and causes Taras Bulba to choose between the love of his son, and the love of the Cossacks.
