Just a quick recap…. Ukrainian adoption is shut down as authority over adoption is transfered from the NAC (National Adoption Center) to the SDA (State Department on Adoption and Children’s Rights). Both of these are Ukrainian government departments.
The NAC was in the Department of Education. The SDA is the in Department of Youth and Sports. All adoption processing is shut down from April 3 to May 1…… or May 3. I have seen a couple of different dates.
There is one exception to the shutdown. Anyone who started their adoption process (traveled to Ukraine and received a referral to be more specific) before April 3, 2006 could continue.
In Ukrainian Adoptions Being Processed I mentioned some families in this position.
Wade and Julia Weston adopted their darling 15 year old daughter on April 10. Their story is amazing.

There have been lots of little miracles along the way, and I have to share the most amazing one. We received our appointment invitation to come to Ukraine to receive a referral to adopt Katya for the 30th of March. This was the last day they were allowing foreigners to come to Ukraine for appointments. She became available for adoption on the 29th of March. Since that day, no new people have been seen for adoption appointments. It is entirely possible, that had her paperwork been delayed by one or two days, and the adoptions were closed down for more than six months, she would have turned 16 during this time and become ineligible for adoption. The timing of this and that she may have never been able to be adopted is what makes us so happy that things have gone as they have.
The Thompson Family will have a court date on April 17, 2006. They are adopting a 5 year old girl and 6 year old boy.
The Hofs adopted their son on April 8. This was their “second attempt at [their] second adoption”.

Gina & Phil Fortini adopted their 3 year old daughter today!!! Yeah!
Jamie and Amy Brennan are in the process of adopting an 11 year old girl and 15 year old girl from Zaporizhzhya. They were hoping for a court date on April 11 or April 12. Fingers crossed that they got it. They haven’t posted since April 8, 2006.
ALERT: An American family (posted on Yahoo’s Adoption_From_Ukraine) has received an invitation letter to request an appointment. The letter stated that the first half of the year is already booked. So the family is looking at apointments after July 2006.
