I sent an email to the US Embassy in Kyiv on September 14 about the latest rumors.
- SDA closed last 2 weeks in October
- Single women and men cannot adopt from Ukraine. Even if they have an approved dossier they won’t be able to adopt. It will be against the law soon.
I received a reply this morning from the US Embassy.
Ukrainian law does not prohibit adoptions by single adoptive parents and we are not aware of any draft legislation on this subject. However, Article 213 of the current Family Code states that priority should be given to married couples; this is why the SDAPRC scheduled married couples first and then would schedule single parents.
It is true that the SDAPRC has not scheduled any families for some period in the end of October. They say they need this time for some internal work. The phones and public inquiries desk will be working.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any additional questions.
Sincerely,
