I thought that I had found most of the interesting Ukrainian adoption books. Well…. I found a few more.

Starting with a classic. I cannot believe that I failed to mention this one. It is a great book for adoptive families that are just getting started and exploring their options. It is used as a reference book for many adoptive families.

The Russian Adoption Handbook: How to Adopt from Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Bulgaria, Belarus, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Moldova
was written by John Maclean in 2004. John is a very nice man who I have only met on-line. He sometimes posts on FRUA’s chat board.

Rainbows from Heaven sounds interesting. It was written in 2004 by a family who adopted 3 children. At times the adoption story is told from the children’s point of view. For example there is a story about the children begging at a church on Sunday. And how glad they were to get enough money to buy bread.

While I was in Kharkiv I visited churches. Old woman and young children begged outside of the churches. And there was a certain dead tiredness to their eyes and body. They kept their eyes down. But when I started dropping coins into everyone’s hands, they came alive. Everyone wanted a coin.

Small Worlds: Adopted Sons, Pet Piranhas, And Other Mortal Concerns
is coming out September 30, 2006. I have it on my watch list because it is written by Robert Klose.

Robert writes for the Christian Science Monitor and has adopted as a single father twice. The first time he adopted from Russia and wrote Adopting Alyosha: A Single Man Finds a Son in Russia. Alyosha is now 21 years old.

Robert adopted Anton from the city of Ochakow in 2001. Ochakow is in the Mykolayiv Oblast (also know as Nikolaiev). Anton is probably 12 years old now.
