Laugh Ukraine Adoption

First came Happy Day and then Happy Day 2... Now we have Super Happy Day. Ukrainian adoption law still hasn't changed.

Ukrainian President Yushchenko vetoed bill 2562. This bill would have made adoption by single men and women illegal. And would have restricted adoptive parent's ages (+45 rules).

The SDA continues to illegally refuse single men's dossiers or return them. I would love to start a letter complaint compaign about this. But it would be counter productive.

SINGLE MEN don't let the SDA get away with this. Politely stand up for your rights. Hire a Ukrainian lawyer if you aren't making progress.

I know a single man who adopted from Dnipropetrovsk in 2001. This is the hardest region to adopt from in Ukraine. The judges are very picky. I know of instances where a single person was required to prove they were single. And most families have to prove they have the right to live in their home.

So how would you prove that you were single? Anyone know of an official government document that does this? There are a couple of creative ways around this. You file your taxes as a "single" person, but this would require showing your income statement to a Ukrainian judge. You could ask for your marriage certificate and get a statement back that the certificate doesn't exist.

Anyway back to the story... This single man, R, got an appointment. He met and bonded with his son-to-be. He went in front of the judge. The judge was very hostile toward R and denied the adoption.

R is an awesome and strong man. He talked to Mrs Kunko. She was the director of the NAC (former Ukrainian adoption authority). She agreed not to show son-to-be to anyone else. R hired a Ukrainian lawyer. He got his congressman and US Embassy involved.

R lost 2 court appeals. And finally 9 months after the original judge denied the adoption, the decision was overturned by Ukraine's Supreme Court. R's son came home shortly after that.

Wow! What a great tenacious man. I'm glad it worked out well for him and his son.

That's a great story to tell his son as he gets older. What a dragon to slay!
