There are a couple of new tidbits.... Now the dossier updates must be mailed to the SDA. And the SDA will start posting appointments to their web site.

I sent an email to the US Embassy in Kyiv on September 14 about the latest rumors.

SDA closed last 2 weeks in October Single women and men cannot adopt from Ukraine. Even if they have an approved dossier they won't be able to adopt. It will be against the law soon.

Yesterday was a weird day... many folks are waiting for the October appointment list.

Brief recap: The SDA (Ukrainian government adoption authority) is the only organization who can provide children's referrals. Families must travel to Ukraine for an appointment for the referral. Right now only families who filed a dossier between Feb 2004 and March 2006 are getting appointments. When is my appointment? Can I adopt a child in 2007? Will Ukrainian adoption be shutdown again next year because about 10% of American families haven't filed their post adoptoin reports? Can single parents adopt, I hear they won't be allowed?

SDA is processing domestic adoptions now. They will be sticking appointment letters into the mail for international adoptive families starting in August.

If you are one of the 1,200 approved families you are probably going crazy waiting for your appointment to travel to Ukraine... to receive your referral... to met your child.... to adopt.... to expand your family.

The SDA during the July 3 press conference mentioned the following nationalities have registered dossiers.

390 America 350 Spain 119 Italy 108 France 1 Belgium 1 Mexico 1 Portugal 1 Slovenia 1 Croatia

This is 972 out of 1,200 registered dossiers. The remaining dossiers probably belong to Israeli, Irish, German, Swedish, Swiss, Canadian or Dutch... more

Citizens from many different countries adopt from Ukraine. All potential adoptive parents have been waiting for news for months and months.

The news from the US Embassy in Ukraine feels good. Families with registered dossiers will start getting appointments on September 1, 2006.

If I had a registered dossier, I would wait and adopt from Ukraine. The big question is should non-registered families wait to see what happens on January 1 2007? The SDA said... more
